The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) is a government agency under the Department of Agriculture in the Philippines, responsible for the development, management, and conservation of the country’s fisheries and aquatic resources. BFAR plays a central role in implementing national fisheries policies, strengthening marine governance, and supporting sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities.
BFAR is actively engaged in capacity building across the Philippines, particularly in areas such as fisheries management, marine protected area (MPA) establishment and management, enforcement, and community-based coastal resource management. The agency works closely with local government units (LGUs), fisherfolk organizations, and national and international partners to enhance institutional and community capacity.
