Expert Profile Overview:

Dr. Achier Chung Fung Chen is a senior marine conservation leader with more than 25 years of experience in marine protected area governance, biodiversity conservation, fisheries policy, and reef fish ecology. She currently serves as Senior Lecturer at the Institut Marin Borneo, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, where she teaches Environmental Laws and Ethics, Seafood Security, and Fisheries Resources Management. Her research focuses on live reef food fish trade, coral reef fish diversity, and marine protected area management effectiveness in Sabah. Before joining academia full-time, she spent two decades as Lead Marine Biologist and Advisor for Reef Guardian Sdn. Bhd., contributing significantly to the Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area, including achieving Malaysia’s first IUCN Green List designation and leading the Adaptive Management Plan 2023–2033. Her work has earned national recognition and active leadership roles within several IUCN specialist groups.
